Prostor parkánu Severočeské galerie ovládly v letošní letní sezóně bronzové sochy jedné z předních osobností současné české výtvarné scény, sochaře Michala Gabriela (* 1960). Člen legendární skupiny Tvrdohlaví vystudoval v letech 1980–1987 sochařství na Akademii výtvarných umění v Praze. Na výtvarnou scénu vstoupil v přelomových 80. letech 20. století a od počátku zaujal svým osobitým projevem. České umění se v tu dobu obracelo k primitivním a archaickým formám a do centra pozornosti nastupující generace se dostalo neakademické ztvárnění figury. Fantazijně pojaté antropomorfní a zoomorfní náměty jsou významným a trvalým prvkem Gabrielovy tvorby dodnes – skrze lidské i zvířecí figury specifickým sochařským jazykem vypráví příběhy ovlivněné mýty a archetypy. Jako jeden z mála našich soudobých sochařů tvoří také exteriérové sochy a instalace, jeho figury i zástupce fauny můžeme potkat na mnoha místech nejen Čech, ale i Evropy, ať už se jedná o náměstí či ulice nebo o přírodní scenerie. Zasazení soch do konkrétního prostředí pečlivě promýšlí, tělesnost – hmotu a tvar – soch nechává aktivně komunikovat s místem, které současně dotváří autorem vyprávěný příběh.

V Litoměřicích se Michal Gabriel představuje postavami hráčů či lovců-průvodců, kterým dělají společnost reprezentanti zvířecí říše. Kočkovité šelmy, žraloci a ptáci současně zastupují živel země, vody a vzduchu. Skupinu doplňují Žena se psem, která průhledem mezi zelení komunikuje s Mauglím, chlapcem džungle. Jednotlivé figury autor různě variuje, v průběhu času se k nim vrací a posouvá jejich výpověď. Sochařské projekty často promýšlí ve skupinách a jinak tomu není ani v tomto případě. Členitý prostor parkánu jej přivádí k novému pojetí situace a převyprávění příběhů – sochy jsou stavěny do nových seskupení a komunikačních vzorců. Podstata ovšem zůstává stejná, všechny prezentované skulptury se stávají našimi průvodci do nedostupných míst podvědomí, snů nebo archetypů a mohou nám tak zpřístupnit skrytá zákoutí lidského bytí. K výpravám do tajemna ostatně odkazuje i název výstavy Mise Mauglí.

Mission Mowgli

This summer the North Bohemian Gallery’s space on the town walls is home to bronze sculptures by one of the leading lights of the Czech contemporary art scene, the sculptor Michal Gabriel (* 1960). A member of the legendary group The Hard-Headed, Gabriel studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Art in Prague from 1980 to 1987. He made his debut on the art scene in that turbulent decade, and the distinctiveness of his work was apparent right from the start. At this time Czech art was turning to primitive, archaic forms, with a new generation focusing attention on the figure, rendered in a way that was remote from academicism. Fantastical anthropomorphic and zoomorphic themes have remained a significant and sustained element in Gabriel’s work ever since, and he uses his idiosyncratic sculptures of humans and animals to tell stories that are informed by myths and archetypes. He is one of the few contemporary Czech sculptors who also work on outdoor sculptures and installations, and we can find his figures and fauna in many places in Bohemia and elsewhere in Europe, whether in streets or squares or natural settings. He carefully deliberates the siting of his sculptures in their specific setting, and allows their corporeality – their mass and form – to actively communicate with the place, which in turn augments the story he is telling.

In Litoměřice Michal Gabriel presents hunters or players or guides who are accompanied by representatives of the animal kingdom, big cats, sharks and birds that also represent the elements – earth, water and air respectively. Besides this group there is Woman with a Dog, who looks into the greenery, communicating with Mowgli, the jungle boy. The artist varies his individual figures, returning to them over time to advance their testimony. He often plans his sculptural projects in terms of groups, as in the present installation. The structure of the space on the town walls leads him a new understanding of the situation, and the stories are retold as the sculptures are rearranged in new groups, establishing new patterns of communication. Yet the essence remains the same, and all of the sculptures on display become our guides, leading us into dreams, archetypes and inaccessible parts of the subconscious. In this way they can open up hidden aspects of human existence. The idea of expeditions into the mysterious is also referenced by the exhibition’s title: Mission Mowgli.
